CREATE-NEO: Mauro Teixeira

MauroTeixeira, MD, PhD
Professor of Immunology
Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG), Brazil

Dr. Mauro Martins Teixeira is Professor of Immunology at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG). He obtained his MD at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais and his PhD at the National Heart and Lung Institute, University of London. He was president of the Brazilian Society of Pharmacology (SBFTE, 2011-2014), Brazilian Society of Inflammation (SBIN, 2018-2020), Member of the Brazilian Academy of Science (currently vice-President responsible for Regions Minas Gerais and Center-west) and Commander of the National Order of Scientific Merit. He is currently Vice President of the International Association of Inflammation Societies (IAIS, 2023-). Dr. Teixeira demonstrated the crucial role of the microbiota and microbial-derived products in controlling inflammatory and behavioral responses, and the relevance of inflammation in mediating tissue damage and lethality during infectious diseases, especially arboviral infections. This knowledge has led to mechanistic molecular studies and new targets for anti-inflammatory therapy. Dr. Teixeira is co-PI for CREATE-NEO's work with UFMG, alongside Dr. Betânia Drumond. He oversees the program’s clinical research in Minas Gerais, from patient diagnosis and treatment to characterizing immune responses to arboviral infections.

The Centers for Research in Emerging Infectious Disease (CREID) is a coordinated network with centers in regions around the globe where emerging and re-emerging infectious disease outbreaks are likely to occur. Multidisciplinary teams of investigators will conduct pathogen/host surveillance, study pathogen transmission, pathogenesis and immunologic responses in the host, and will develop reagents and diagnostic assays for improved detection for important emerging pathogens and their vectors.

NIAID launched the CREID Network in 2020.This website is run by CREATE-NEO, a member of the CREID Network independent of NIH/NIAID.
