LMSA’s Dia de los Muertos
Día de los Muertos recognizes death as a natural part of the human experience. On Día de los Muertos, the dead are also a part of the community, awakened from their eternal sleep to share celebrations with their loved ones. Assured that the dead would be insulted by mourning or sadness, we will celebrate the lives of the deceased with traditional music, poem reciting, and delicious conchas (Mexican sweet bread).
The Latino Mexican American Studies (LMAS) Program at the University of Texas at Galveston (UTMB) will hold its annual Día de los Muertos celebration on November 4, 2024 from 5–7 PM on Old Red Lawn. The event is free and open to all UTMB students and staff.
The celebration will include:
- Authentic Mexican food from Bambú
- A live performance by Wilmer Rodriguez and his group, @mariachi_azteca_de_america
- Folklórico dancers from Ball High School
- An ofrenda where students and faculty can submit photos to honor loved ones
