Alexander Bukreyev, PhDProfessor, Departments of Pathology and Microbiology & Immunology, University of Texas Medical Branch – Galveston, Texas, USA

Alexander Bukreyev is currently a Professor in the Department of Pathology and the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB). While at the Laboratory of Infectious Diseases (LID) at NIAID/NIH in 1995-2010, his research focused on molecular and immunological studies of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). At LID, he also worked on the development of vectored vaccines against emerging and respiratory viruses, including SARS coronavirus, RSV, human parainfluenza virus type 3 (HPIV3), the highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza virus, and Ebola virus. Currently his group at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston focuses on the following areas of research: (1) development of vaccines against filoviruses, arenaviruses and SARS-CoV-2, (2) characterization of antibody responses to filovirus and SARS-CoV-2 infections in humans and development of therapeutic human monoclonal antibody treatments for these viruses; (3) investigation of mechanisms of “immune paralysis” caused by filoviruses. To gain insight into these topics, they employ the use of human immune cells, animal models, molecular tools including reverse and immunological tools such as imaging flow cytometry and multi-parameter flow cytometry. My research includes experiments that utilize the BSL-2, -3 -4 labs in the Galveston National Laboratory. During his career, he has acquired extensive experience in molecular virology of RNA viruses, including the use or development of reverse genetic systems of five such viruses. I have also acquired extensive experience in viral immunology and in vaccinology, including pre-clinical testing of vaccine candidates in small animals and nonhuman primates. His studies have resulted in more than 140 publications, including more than 80 first or senior/co-senior authorship publications in Science, Cell, Journal of Clinical Investigation, Science Translational Medicine, PNAS, PLOS Pathogens, Immunity, Nature Microbiology, Nature Structural & Molecular Biology, Nature Communications, Cell Host & Microbe, The Lancet, Cell Reports, Journal of Virology and other high-quality journals. He is a current member of NIH Vaccines Against Microbial Diseases (VMD) Study Section. He completed the UTMB Foundational Management Training Program, and is well qualified to direct research groups.
