How to Apply
To qualify for the UTMB Health System Administrative Fellowship position, applicants
must be currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a CAHME or
equivalently accredited graduate program in healthcare administration,
business administration, or similar degree program.

For initial consideration into the Administrative Fellowship Program, please include the following in your application package:
- Cover Letter
- Resume (1 page maximum)
- Personal Statement (2 page maximum)
- Official or Unofficial Graduate School Transcript
- Three Letters of Recommendation (at least one from a professor and one from a current and/or previous employer)
Applicants must attach and submit all documents in the application through UTMB Human Resources.
The cover letter and letters of recommendation can be addressed to the UTMB Health Administrative Fellowship Selection Committee.
Your personal statement may include information such as your career goals, your reasons for applying for the Administrative Fellowship at UTMB Health, and what you hope to accomplish as an Administrative Fellow.
Your application materials must be compiled into ONE complete PDF document and uploaded as an attachment in the HR application. The deadline to apply for the 2025-2026 application cycle is 11:59pm CST on Sunday, September 1, 2024. Applications that are submitted after this time will not be considered.
Following receipt and review of all application materials, qualifying candidates will be contacted to arrange for an initial interview date. After first-round phone interviews, successful candidates will be invited for on-site interviews with the Health System Executive Team in Late September/Early October.

Do you accept applications from individuals who have completed the didactic portion of their Master's degree but have not yet graduated?
Graduation from your Master's program is required before commencing the fellowship. However, if you have completed your coursework and the fellowship is a requirement needed to formally graduate, this is acceptable as well.

Will you notify me if my application is complete?
Yes, applicants will be notified via email once their applications are received and will be updated throughout the recruitment process.

What criteria are used to select the Administrative Fellow?
We screen candidates on several factors, such as academic performance in their graduate programs, having a well written personal statement, prior experience in healthcare, and letters of recommendation. During the interview process, excellent candidates exhibit professionalism, leadership capabilities, knowledge of UTMB Health, and cultural fit.
Overall, having a strong interest in academic medicine, evidence of solid teamwork, communication and analytical skills are desired in a successful applicant. -
How will projects be assigned to the Fellow?
The Preceptor and Fellow work together to select projects based on the priorities of the health system and the interests of the Fellow.

Who is the Preceptor for the Administrative Fellowship?
The Fellow receives mentorship from their Preceptor, Wayne Keathley, MPH who serves as the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of UTMB Health.

How long is the Fellowship?
The Fellowship is a one year commitment, starting on a date in June that is mutually agreed upon between the Fellow and the Preceptor.

Where will the Fellow be based within the health system?
The Fellow will be based in the executive office at the Galveston campus, but will have the opportunity to travel to the regional hospitals and clinics as needed for meetings, rotations, and project work.

How many Fellows does UTMB accept per year?
UTMB only accepts one Fellow per year.

Is the Fellowship a paid position?
Yes, the Fellow is considered a full-time employee and is offered a competitive salary and employee benefits for the duration of the year.

What types of conferences can the Fellow attend?
The Fellow has the opportunity to attend one health management conference during the Fellowship. In the past, many Fellows have attended the ACHE Congress, but other possibilities include Vizient, HIMSS, or IHI.
