Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.2 Recommendations

Overview

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version2.2 was published on September 2023. UTMB strives WCAG 2.1 AA compliance.  As we look toward the new version.  These are recommendations for priority in adopting them.

WCAG 2.2 Adoption Recommendations

  1. Guideline 2.4 Navigable
    1. 2.4.11 Focus Not Obscured (Minimum) (AA) adopt for new templates
    2. 2.4.12 Focus Not Obscured (Enhanced) (AAA) adopt for new templates
    3. 2.4.13 Focus Appearance (AAA) adopt for new templates
  2. Guideline 2.5 Input Modalities
    1. 2.5.7 Dragging Movements (AA) adopt
    2. 2.5.8 Target Size (Minimum) (AA) adopt aim for 2.5.5:Target Size (Level AAA)
    3. Note: 24x 24 is too small for most fingeritps to activate.
  3. Guideline 3.2 Predictable
    1. 3.2.6 Consistent Help (A) adopt
  4. Guideline 3.3 Input Assistance
    1. 3.3.7 Redundant Entry (A) adopt
    2. 3.3.8 Accessible Authentication (Minimum) (AA) next phase, security review
    3. 3.3.9 Accessible Authentication (Enhanced) (AAA) next phase, security review

Best Practice: avoid barriers between your consumers and the corresponding content and technologies.  This will naturally meet higher WCAG standards, increase usability (and for web applications and content -- will improve Search Engine Optimization).

Current WCAG 2.2 Coverage

  1. Added: 2.5.8 Target Size (Level AA) 24x24
  2. Added: 2.5.5 Target Size (AAA) 44x44
  3. Removed: 4.1.1 Parsing – (VLH note: this is controversial in a11y circles, technically if other rules are followed it won’t be an issue but it can be.)

Note: Other WCAG 2.2 criteria require manual testing
