Day 71: Did you know? Web sustainability

Being green, saving energy, and sustainability are in the news a lot lately, but what does that have to do with digital accessibility?

It turns out that designing more accessible pages helps decrease the energy used by web pages. For example:

  • Every time a video isn't loaded automatically, it helps folks with cognitive disabilities.  It also reduces the power load of the page if that video isn't watched.
  • Pages that use dark mode can help users with low vision.  They also use less power than white web pages.

This may not seem like much of a savings, but when you compound it over all of the web users and devices world-wide, it makes a significant difference.

Designing for accessibility is also good for the planet!
