Day 62: Did you know? Keyboard accessibility

Keyboards and website accessibility

For a website to be accessible, it needs to be able to function with a keyboard alone (no mouse). When creating a page or web app, make sure that you can navigate and activate all parts of a page or app by using the keyboard only.  Use tab, enter, and the arrow key to navigate and activate any menus and forms.  Also check if you can easily see where you are on the page, is there a focus indicator that shows the active control?

Why is this important?

  • People who use screen readers use the keyboard to navigate
  • You can get a temporary disability, for example, an injury to your mouse hand
