Day 55: Accessible hyperlinks

Best practices for accessible hyperlinks (links)

We often create links in email, documents, and web pages, if these links aren't created correctly, they can be a significant accessibility barrier.  When we create a link we provide a Uniform Resource Locator (URL)

Well-formatted links
  • avoid one word links
  • create meaningful link text
  • ideally limit link text to under 50 characters
  • should be meaningful and indicate what selecting them will do (go to a page, email someone, download a document, etc.)
  • avoid text instructing the user to click the link. If absolutely required; avoid using the word "click," instead use "select." (Not everyone is using a mouse and can click)
  • don't use the same link text for more than one link in the content (for example,  read more, read more, read more)
