Best practices for accessible hyperlinks (links)
We often create links in email, documents, and web pages, if these links aren't created correctly, they can be a significant accessibility barrier. When we create a link we provide a Uniform Resource Locator (URL)
- avoid one word links
- create meaningful link text
- ideally limit link text to under 50 characters
- should be meaningful and indicate what selecting them will do (go to a page, email someone, download a document, etc.)
- avoid text instructing the user to click the link. If absolutely required; avoid using the word "click," instead use "select." (Not everyone is using a mouse and can click)
- don't use the same link text for more than one link in the content (for example, read more, read more, read more)
