These days abbreviations are everywhere. We shouldn't assume that someone knows the meaning of an acronym we may be familiar with. The first time an acronym is used all words should be written out, followed by the acronym in parentheses. After that you can use
only the acronym.
Some examples:
- The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed in 1990. The ADA was created to protect the civil rights of people with disabilities.
- Microsoft Teams has an Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) feature which creates computer-generated live captioning of speech to text.
Exceptions:
Abbreviations such as PDF which has become common usage and replaced the original term (Portable Document Format).
